This direction is also followed by Francis Poulenc’s settings of St. Anthony intercessions and prayers of humility by Saint Francis. Poulenc works with Gregorian motifs and reminiscences of the archaism of early polyphony in his typical way to craft miniatures of great sonic beauty. The compositions by Veljo Tormis stand in stark contrast to these: in the manner of ritual invocations, the Estonian composer calls upon the gods of thunder or, in his settings of sections from the Finnish Kalevala epic, commemorates those who died in the sinking of the MS Estonia. The programme also features works by Einojuhani Rautavaara and Zoltán Kodály, as well as Gregorian chants. The different expressive forms could hardly be more contrasting or diverse – a wonderful challenge for the men of the RIAS Kammerchor.
