Titans Rising: "Fascinating Woman - Claude-Catherine de Clermont"

Saturday, 10. May 2025

7 p.m.

Villa Elisabeth

Concert | Early music | Renaissance

An exploration of the earliest "airs de cour" as heard in the salons of Claude-Catherine de Clermont, Comtesse de Retz (1543-1603).

Poets, musicians, intellectuals, and courtiers gathered in the salon of Claude-Catherine de Clermont, Comtesse de Retz (1543-1603), to discuss their works, recite poetry, sing verses set to music, and engage in intellectual debates. As an 'influencer' of her time, the Comtesse used her rich classical education to promote cultural creativity in late 16th-century France. We focus on the Airs de Cour, a musical form closely associated with literary salons that accompanied evening readings, lectures, and discussions. Their musical context includes the 4- and 5-part polyphonic chansons of Nicholas de la Grotte, Pierre Certon, and Clément Jannequin. From Adrian Le Roy's "Livre d'airs," we hear Airs de Cour for solo voice and lute. His lute method also offers challenging chansons by Lassus, which invite complex lute solos. The concert includes diminutions on Airs de Cour and is enriched by poetry recitations.
