Organ concert: Ulfert Smidt
6 p.m.
Organ music | St. Sophia's Church | Ulfert Smidt
In December, an Advent organ concert awaits you at Sophienkirche with works by Jehan Alain and Thierry Escaich – but above all with music by Johann Sebastian Bach. His compositions are particularly impressive when performed on the baroque Schuke organ. The performer is Ulfert Smidt, organist at the Goll organ of Marktkirche Hannover and professor at the local music academy.
In addition to Bach's well-known masterpieces, he will also perform a rarely played rarity: Jonathan Harvey's Toccata for Organ and Tape (1980). Harvey's music is difficult to classify stylistically. It is rooted in the Anglican church music tradition, but was also influenced by his later work at IRCAM, the famous center for experimental music in Paris. Both left audible traces in Harvey's compositions.
During the organ concerts in the Sophienkirche, a video transmission in the nave allows the audience to experience the organists' fascinating hand and footwork up close.
