Organ concert: Michael Veltman
6 p.m.
Organ music | St. Sophia's Church | Michael Veltman
Michael Veltman, composer, church musician, and artistic director of the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne, brings an extraordinary program of contemporary organ music to the Sophienkirche. The Kunst-Station St. Peter is considered a unique place—a spiritual space for art and new music—and has served as a model for numerous similar projects. The new organ at Berlin's Zionskirche was also inspired by the organ at St. Peter.
In his concert, Veltman presents works from the Cologne scene: Friedrich Jaecker, a student of György Ligeti, impresses with an extremely concentrated tonal language. Russian composer and performance artist Elena Rykova combines music with visual art; her graphically innovative scores are not only performed but also exhibited in museums worldwide.
At the organ concerts in the Sophienkirche, a video transmission in the nave allows the audience to experience the fascinating hand and footwork of the organists up close.
