In the midst of the Thirty Years' War, Oberammergau is struck by the plague—until the village vows to perform the Passion of Christ from now until the end of time if God spares them. It falls to the inexperienced pastor Johannes to put the play together. In no time at all, he must transform farmers and shepherds into apostles and Romans—without costumes, without a stage, without a script. And on top of that, he faces a formidable opponent: Village leader Agnes has lost both her children to the plague, hates God, and will do anything to thwart the project. Soon the village splits into friends and foes of the Passion. And Johannes must move heaven and earth to defeat Agnes, the plague, and his own doubts…
Berlin-based author Robert Löhr writes screenplays, plays, musicals, and radio plays—as well as novels that have been translated into 25 languages. His historical narratives combine meticulous research with gripping storytelling.
