"Fly, my sighs": Twelve love songs by David Pohle based on texts by Paul Fleming
6 p.m.
Early music | Concert
David Pohle's love songs, based on texts by Paul Fleming from 1650, are probably among the earliest works in German music history that deserve to be called a "song cycle." In his partly humorous, partly elegiac texts, Fleming addresses his tragic love for the two sisters Anna and Elsabe Niehus. David Pohle, a student of Heinrich Schütz, set these odes to music as duets for two treble singers – today we would call them countertenors. It is particularly noteworthy that in the partly strophic, partly cantata-like forms, the two singers are in dialogue not only with each other, but above all with the two violins, which symbolize the presence of the highly revered ladies, while the singing voices express the inner turmoil of the protagonist.
