Academy for Early Music Berlin: "Marc'Antonio e Cleopatra"
7:30 p.m. (Saturday)
6:00 p.m. (Sunday)
Opera by Johann A. Hasse
With his *Serenata*, the then 26-year-old composer Johann Adolf Hasse caused a sensation in Naples for the first time. At the work’s premiere, Farinelli—arguably the most famous castrato in opera history—sang the role of Cleopatra, while the male title role was performed by the contralto Vittoria Tesi. This unique sensual quality of the vocal types is also reflected in our performance in an extraordinary way: the male soprano Federico Fiorio sings the role of Cleopatra, while Margherita Maria Sala takes on the trouser role of the lover. Both are among the outstanding voices of a new generation of singers.
