About the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde am Weinberg
The culturally engaged Protestant parish of Weinberg founded the Kultur Büro Elisabeth in 2003 with the aim of establishing a cultural enterprise in its listed buildings and ensuring their preservation. Since 2003, the sole shareholder of Kultur Büro Elisabeth gGmbH has therefore been the parish, represented by members of the parish council and the parish itself. The statutory objective of the gGmbH is to enable the preservation and renovation of Villa Elisabeth, the Schinkel Church of St. Elisabeth, and other listed buildings belonging to the parish through cultural events and rentals.
A vibrant community between the Spree River and the former Berlin Wall
The parish is located in central Berlin between the Spree River and the former Berlin Wall on the border between the districts of Mitte and Wedding. It was formed in 1999 from the merger of seven different parishes and was renamed from Sophiengemeinde to Kirchengemeinde am Weinberg in 2014. The three characteristic church towers of the Zionskirche, Sophienkirche, and Golgathakirche dominate the cityscape. The parish includes St. Johannes-Evangelist-Kirche, which is leased to the Berlin parish of the Rum-Orthodox Church of Antioch, St. Elisabeth-Kirche, three popular Protestant kindergartens, an emergency shelter for women, and the Kieztreff Koepjohann community center. The mission statement of the Protestant parish at Weinberg stands for neighborly and cooperative development and focuses on the various urban lifestyles.
The parish's goal remains to inspire people to join the church in different ways and to have an impact on the neighborhood. The church and choir music offerings are outstanding. The parish also focuses on working with children, young people, students, and families, as well as on diaconal engagement.
